Need the first course for your bankruptcy credit counseling requirement?

Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education meets your second course, pre-discharge requirement. This course is only for people who have already filed bankruptcy and have a bankruptcy case number. We don't offer the pre-filing credit counseling course required prior to filing. AccessHope.net* credit counseling company recommends Dave Ramsey’s Debtor Education for the second course.

Do I have to provide my attorney's name to sign up?

No. Your attorney's name is not required to sign up for Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education course. You will be asked for your attorney's information during sign up, which can be skipped. If you enter it, your completion certificate will be emailed to you and your attorney. We have many attorneys who are already registered with us. If your attorney is not in our system, you can enter their information during sign up and we will send them a friendly invite to register.

What is HAMP, and how can it help me?

HAMP is the Home Affordable Modification Program. HAMP offers an opportunity for struggling homeowners to stay in their homes by modifying their monthly mortgage payments to make them affordable. What is the National Mortgage Settlement, and how can it help me?

The National Mortgage Settlement is the largest consumer financial protection settlement in United States history and settles certain state and federal investigations relating to mortgage service abuses, including abuses in the bankruptcy process. To permit borrowers to determine whether their loans are affected by this settlement, the timeline for relief and other eligibility questions, government offices involved in the settlement have posted information on several websites.

Is Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education the same as Financial Peace University?

No. Financial Peace University (FPU) is a 13-week course that includes a lifetime membership along with a kit. Lessons for Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education were taken from FPU, based on the content requirements of the U.S. Trustee. The full FPU course includes many additional lessons. We suggest taking the full FPU course to build on what you've learned in Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education.

Does the Financial Peace University 9-week course qualify for the pre-discharge completion certificate?

Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education is the only course we offer that has been approved by the U.S. Trustee to earn a pre-discharge completion certificate. If you are in need of the pre-discharge debtor education requirement, then you will need to take Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education. It includes abridged FPU lessons, as well as segments specifically created for bankruptcy filers. Additionally, various procedural components are included as required by the U.S. Trustee.

May I take this course if I haven't filed bankruptcy?

No. Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education is only for people who have filed bankruptcy and have a bankruptcy case number. No. Dave Ramsey's Debtor Education was created to satisfy the requirements of the bankruptcy law that went into effect October 17, 2005. The requirement states that you must complete a debtor education course before your case can be discharged. If you have already completed your bankruptcy, you do not need to take the course. However, Financial Peace University is available to individuals, groups and organizations. Will I receive a completion certificate? How long does it take?

Yes. The completion certificate will be sent to you once you have completed the course. The U.S. Trustee requires that we manually create the certificate, so certificates are sent out during our office hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Central Time). If you complete the course during our office hours, you will probably receive your certificate the same day. If not, you will receive the completion certificate the next business day.

Will my attorney receive a copy of my completion certificate?

When you sign up, you will be asked for your attorney's information. If you enter it, your completion certificate will be emailed to you and your attorney. We have many attorneys who are already registered with us. If your attorney is one of those, you will only need to enter their name. We recommend you call your attorney after you receive your completion certificate to make sure they received it as well.
